Planting Day at Te Maire Lagoon in Shannon

Yesterday on Wednesday 14 June our class travelled with Room 6 to a place called Te Maire Lagoon in Shannon to help plant trees. We were invited by Horizons Regional Council. We had to take a bus because it was too far to drive.

Before we started we had a karakia led by Matua Robert Ketu and Pa Wylie. We helped plant 1,800 trees in just under two hours. Afterwards we were starving! We had kai and water given to us by Ngāti Whakatere. We all enjoyed our day. Written by Poutama.

Cooking Technology in Poutama

Last week we started Cooking Technology in Poutama and the year 6 students from Tuakana. We started with a ‘no bake slice’. We had to pick a slice that the whole class could eat, including Lilly who has an anaphylaxis allergy to eggs and nuts. We decided on lolly cake. We split up into 4 groups with a year 6 leader in each group. We were all assigned a task in our group. We used maths concepts that we are learning about during our maths breakout groups (fractions, and capacity). Unfortunatly our school technology room is out of action due to a flooding disaster (a rat ate through our dishwasher waste pipe!) so we had to find room in our staffroom and outside to work.

We liked the process of making our slice, but loved eating the final product more! This week on Friday we are making and baking bread!

Alien Monsters!

Kia ora!

A few weeks ago, Miss Salton taught us how to use Google Draw to create a creature. We could use any shapes we wanted using the shapes and line tool. We coloured are shapes using the fill bucket, and some of us even learnt how to create a gradient effect for our creature.

Most people also made a background for their monster or alien.

We used our creative skills (one of our values!) to help us come up with a creature. We learnt about the different tools that Google Draw can give us. We also learnt how to search for pictures for our backgrounds.

Exploring Blogs

Today we learned about the different parts of a blog. We also talked again about the reasons for blogging. We learned that not every blog post has to be a display of published work – sometimes we can share a draft or work in progress on our blog to get feedback from other people about what we might try next. Another reason to blog is to teach other people something that we know how to do really well.

Based on this learning, we brainstormed a list of things that we might like to post about. Now we will begin crafting our very first posts for our individual learner blogs. Here’s our list of ideas; we’d love to hear your suggestions so we can have more ideas.

Private and Personal

We are learning to make smart decisions about what personal information we share online. We have learned that we musn’t share any personal information that would help people to find us in real life; examples of this sort of information are our address, our phone number, and our last name.

To demonstrate our understanding of these ideas we arranged images of different examples of information on a table; we have to decide whether the information was private or public. Then we had to explain what we were thinking when we made each decision.

This is an important topic to learn about because we are getting ready to start posting on our own personal blogs next term.

Here is an example of a finished Google Drawing of this work.

Boxing

We started our boxing sessions today! We get these for 4 weeks on a Monday! So much fun! Thanks to Jon and Perry from Hinemoa Boxing for delivering these lessons to not only our school, but most other schools in the Horowhenua region – FOR FREE!

Assembly

This week, we shared what we had been learning in class in assembly.

Miss Salton helped us with creating pick-a-paths and animations, and our Friday relief teacher (while Miss Salton does the DFI) taught us about Music Lab.

We are also really proud of how much we have accomplished in our rākau sessions and some of us were brave enough to share our learning too!

Here is our slideshow!

Our Digital Footprint

We have been learning about our online footprint. We have learned that everything we share online can be searched, copied, shared, and is permanent. We learned this by watching a video and talking about what we’d seen; we also talked about times when we’ve shared something online and it’s been copied and shared without our permission. This is important information to learn because we have started our class blog, so we are actively sharing information online, during class time.

We collected screenshots of the places we visited online in the last 24 hours and inserted them onto our footprint. We also took a selfie to go with our footprint. We learned how to change the shape of our selfie by using Mask tool in Google Slides.

Here is a slidedeck of our footprints. We hope you enjoy looking through them.

Drawing Germbots

We used Google Draw to create some Germbots to fight covid-19. In this lesson we were learning how to use some tools in Google Draw. The tools we practiced using were the Shapes Tool, the Arrange Tool to send shapes to the back or bring them to the front, and the Group Tool. Once we had finished making our robots we added a background; we could choose from a coloured background or a picture that we chose from the internet. Here is a slidedeck of our robots. We hope you like them!
