Rākau

Here is what we get up to in our Rākau lessons with Matua George. Tuakana (who are year 6-8) are also in these lessons with us.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this video Poutama class! I really liked the music that your teacher has put over it, and also how you are all so engaged in doing the movements with your rākau. I’ve never tried this before, but I’m really interested in Māori tikanga. How long have you been learning these skills?

    1. Hi Mrs Murphy,

Mātua George started working with us at the beginning of Term 2. When we first started we learnt the tikanga about the rākau (like how to hold it and what not to do with it).
We spent all of term 2 in our hall learning different movements and the words associated with the movements. The movements are called: Io, Rūaumoko, Ranginui, Papatuanuku, Tāne Mahuta, Rūaumoko, Io.
This term, as it got warmer we were able to move outside and begin doing some exercises with the rākau.

  2. Hello Poutama class,

We like the song. We liked all the actions and the way that they were in time with the music. We like how when you’re in a group, the rākau all together make it look synchronised and easy.

Watching this video makes us want to the learn the rākau and its meaning too. Lots of us would love to learn and we do have some rākau here at our school. Maybe we need Matua George to come too! Maybe we could do some rākau with modern music.

How long have you been learning the rākau? Why was one of the boys at the front during the video?
